This is my collection of photos from ten days at The Open, played in Muirfield in Gullane, Scotland. It was an amazing experience, even for a non-golfer like me. Getting to see, up close, the world's best golfers compete on this historic course, coupled with an exciting project and a great team of people that I got to know along the way made this a memorable experience for me.
My photos are a combination of behind the scenes shots of "life on the compound" where we, as contractors, worked on our various projects along with shots of the event and the course itself.
During my project at The Open, played at nearby Muirfield, I stayed about four miles away in a lovely home in the village of Aberlady. During the morning and evening hours, I took quite a few shots around Aberlady and the nearby towns of Gullane and North Berwick.
One of the most amazing evenings of my stay was when my hosts took me on a walk in the woods near their home. Those woods turned out to be the grounds of Gosford Estate with its lake, boathouse, mausoleum, curling house and phenomenal manor home.
I was not expecting to round a bend in the woods and step onto the lawn of such a stately and massive manor home. It was a storybook moment that I tried to repeat for my wife a few days later when she arrived from London. I hope to return and take far more detailed photos on a future trip.
Duchray Castle is a phenomenal B&B in the Queen Elizabeth forest in rural Scotland near the village of Aberfoyle. We stayed one night there and plan to return on subsequent trips for longer stays.
These shots are in and around the grounds followed by some shots of Stirling Castle that I grabbed on our way south to Yorkshire, England.
The Blue Angels (and a few shots of other performers) at The Lynchburg Air Show. The shots are a combination of their rehearsal on May 20th and the show on May 22nd of 2011. I opted not to attend the full show (not a fan of baking in the summer heat for hours with no shade), but I couldn't pass up getting some shots from outside the airport. If you get a chance to see The Blue Angels, don't let it pass you by... and, please do yourself a favor and wear earplugs. I'm dead serious about that!
NOTE: All of the class photos below are labeled according to their available crops. Every class photo taken works in both 4x6 and 8x12. A number of the class photos, however, are also possible to crop in a more traditional, nearer to square 8x10 format and are marked accordingly. Finally, the faint half/press logo watermark across these sample photos will, of course, NOT appear in the your final print.
